Set amid some of the most beautiful scenery along the British Columbia Coast, Powell River has a wealth of natural resources. The pristine beauty of the ocean, lakes, rivers and forests make it a wonderful place to live or visit. Powell River supports some of the finest educational, recreational and cultural facilities in Canada. New residents and visitors alike comment on the warm and friendly atmosphere when they first arrive in the community. Powell River is located on the Sunshine Coast of the British Columbia mainland 135 km (88 miles) Northwest of Vancouver. Jervis Inlet separates Powell River from the Lower Sunshine Coast. To the west lies the Strait of Georgia and Vancouver Island.
The Powell River regional Area has a total of 1,260,160 acres and the municipality covers a total of 10,212 acres which is made up of 7,143 acres of land and 3,069 acres of water.
The Powell River area is an excellent overnight getaway destination out of Vancouver, and Vancouver Island. Accommodations range from luxury bed and breakfasts and self-contained private rentals to family resorts, motor inns, and affordable cottage stays. Many offer packaged stays based on romance, adventure or cultural getaways.
Powell River is a year-round sea-to-mountain recreation area. The community boasts a first class recreation centre, an 18-hole championship golf course, a curling rink, tennis courts, a 400-metre track, as well as many baseball and soccer fields. Powell River offers world class salmon fishing, trout fishing, hiking, diving, canoeing, sailing, walking and kayaking. The community is a world-renowned 'hot spot' for scuba diving with 19 dive sites in the immediate vicinity. The world's finest underwater statue, a 3 metre bronze mermaid, is located in 30 metres of water at Saltery Bay Provincial Park.
The community of Powell River lays claim to one of the mildest climates in all of Canada. The area has a moderate average rainfall of between 101 and 135 centimetres (45-53 inches) with an average of 1,400 to 1,900 hours of sunshine. The year round temperature average is 10 degrees Celsius (50 Degrees Fahrenheit). In the summer the temperatures vary from 18- 30 Degrees Celsius (65-90 Degrees Fahrenheit). The safety and security of a small town with the infrastructure of a major city make it an ideal location to work and live or spend your well deserved vacation.
