Travelling in Canada

Citizens or permanent residents of the United States do not require visas or passports to visit Canada. Passports are recommended as they verify citizenship. Where a current passport is not available, US citizens should carry identification papers (originals or certified true copies only) showing their citizenship, such as, birth, baptismal, or naturalization certificates plus one identification card containing a photo.

Permanent residents of the US are advised to carry their Resident Alien Card (US Form 1-151 or Form 1-551). All foreign visitors entering Canada must show a valid passport or an alternative legal travel document. Some may require visas to enter the country. A valid drivers licence alone is not sufficient to prove citizenship. For more information, contact Immigration Canada in Ottawa.
