Powell
Forest Canoe Route -
Recommendations and Information
1 . Do the PFCR in a counterclockwise direction, since portaging between Windsor Lake and Goat Lake is downhill.
2. The new access to the Lois Lake campground from the highway is directly accross from Loubert road, follow the signs. When there is logging around this access, the bypass route is just farther south on the MacMillan Bloedel Logging road.
3. Purify your water, even though supplies should be safe.
4. Consider staying at Herondell Bed & Breakfast. Safe parking is available.
5. PLEASE be extremely cautious when approaching and crossing the logging roads. LISTEN for the trucks and keep out of their way.
6. Allow 5 days for the trip, unless you know you can do faster. It has been done in 18 hours before.
7. A cellular phone is a good safety device - make sure that the battery is fully charged.
8. Each campsite has picnic table, out house, fire pit and most often firewood, except when campfires aren't permitted ( inquire if you are concerned). We recommend cooking on a stove.
9. The campsites are maintained with very limited budget, please do your part in keeping them clean for others to enjoy.
7. Consider a side trip to the Fiddlehead Farm when you are on Powell Lake. Be sure to call ahead for reservation.
8. When at Nanton Lake, recommended portage through Ireland Lake to Dodd Lake, the trail connecting Little Horseshoe Lake and Beaver Lake has quite a few ups and downs.
9. The majority of the portages are 20-45 minutes long with a clear, comfortable, well marked path. You don't have to wear heavy hiking boots, a hi-top runners would be sufficient.
10. You cannot use Canoe wheels on PFCR, there are many rest stands along the trail though.
11. Every lake is accessible by dirt logging roads, bailing out is an option if in trouble.
12. Powell Lake has a regular noon wind, three foot swells are not uncommon.
13. When on Lois Lake, be sure to visit some of the islands along the way. With sandy beaches and tiny forest, exploration can be very interesting.
14. Good rain gear is recommended, bring light plastic sheeting if your tent is not waterproof.
15. All wild animals are potentially dangerous if approached too closely, especially bear with cubs. Be careful and keep your distance. Carry bear spray if available.
16. If you see others abusing the environment or bothering animals, report their vehicle license numbers to the Forest Services office or the Visitors' Bureau.
17. Please take the time to fill out survey forms for the PFCR. This will help both Forest Services and the Visitors Bureau in future planning/lobbying. Good Luck and Have Fun!!
