Sunshine Coast Trail
Content courtesy of Tourism Powell River

(REVISED DEC 1998)

The Trail was conceived in 1992 when a group of outdoor enthusiasts realized that there was a vanishing amount of accessible old growth left on the Upper Sunshine Coast. They formed the Powell River Parks and Wilderness Society (PRPAWS), a registered non-profit society, to set aside protected areas linked by corridors, as well as beginning work on the 180km trail connecting the old growth from Sarah Point to Saltery Bay.

PRPAWS approached this staggering goal one trail at a time. Through volunteer labor, the organization built new trails often connecting with old ones. The new trails quickly became popular with the public since they allowed people entry into areas which were until then accessed only by bushwackers or loggers.

With its many access points the Sunshine Coast Trail offers a choice of levels and duration as well as types of terrain. We believe it will become a wolrd class facility that will be enjoyed by visitors and locals.

Recommendations and Information
1. Do the trail from north to south, since water taxi connections at the end of the hike are chancy. Call one of the water taxi's to book your trip. The trail head starts just north of Sarah Bay, where the cable post and service road is visible from the water.
2. Purify your water, even though supplies should be safe.
3. Consider staying at Cedar Lodge at the end of day 2. Safe parking is available at the lodge. They may be able to arrange delivery of your car once your hike is completed ?
4. Allow 10 - 15 km per day, unless you know you can do more comfortably.
5. A cellular phone is a good safety device - make sure that the battery is fully charged.
6. There are more developed campsites on the second part of the hike, between the Shinglemill and Fiddlehead Farm. ( 30+ km )
7. Beware! Late fall to early spring may find snow in the Confederation Lake area. It is at 600+ m elevation and can be cold. There is a warm cabin with a stove and firewood, but it's first come, first served. In addition, spring visitors may have to work their way around winter blowdowns and slides on this trail. Be Careful!
8. Be sure to call ahead for accommodation/transportation at Fiddlehead Farm.
9. There are now kilometer markers in place, from north to south only. Three inches orange squares give your distance from the Sarah Point trailhead. These should correspond with your trail guide distances.
10. Please take the time to fill out survey forms for the trail. This will help both PR PAWS and the Visitors Bureau in future planning/lobbying.

Good Luck and Have Fun!!

Hiking Events

The following hikes and special events are being organized:
contact PRPAWS (604) 483-9565

Annual Marathon Shuffle Early May, starting at Malaspina Road. The total distance to the Shinglemill is just under 29 km. Volunteers from the hiking club and St. John's Ambulance will be stationed where roads cross the trail to provide emergency service, check-in, and refreshments.

Gwendoline Hills Hike Early May, we will charter the watertaxi in Lund and cruise up to Sarah Point from where we will walk to Wednesday Lake along the Sunshine Coast Trail. Then we'll walk out to Gilpin Road for a pick up to Lund. Transportation costs will range from $10 to $15.

Annual Tour de Powell River End of July, the hike will begin from Sarah Point and will end at Saltery Bay. This is an end-to end hike. It will take 12 to 14 days to complete. A plan is being developed based on the light-pack concept. For about 90% of the time, hikers could carry a day pack and get resupplied along the route.

Powell River Hiking Club The Powell River Hiking club has organized hikes on Wednesday and on the weekend. The hikes ranges from easy to moderately difficult. Join them for an introduction to the trails in Powell River Area.
