Named after a fish saltery located in the bay in the early 1900's, Saltery Bay is a traditional part of local aboriginal history and use, as evidenced by the "middens" or mounds of clam and oyster shells along the beach. See Canada's first underwater statue, Powell River's famous mermaid, accessible via scuba diving at Mermaid Cove. Wheelchair accessible and accepts reservations. Main recreation: scuba diving (with disabled diver access), swimming and sunbathing beaches, 2 km. trail to view Little Saltery Falls, and salmon fishing from April to October (plus winter spring salmon fishing for the truly adventurous). |
